Northern Sportive Lemur
By: Kaitlyn R
Northern sportive Lemurs are Americas forth endangered animal. They got their name (sportive) from a boxer- like stance they make when they feel threatened. These lemurs have a pale grey-brown fur with a darker stripe that runs from their head to their tail. With the big eyes they have that help them see better at night, they are known to have binocular vision. Northern sportive Lemurs live in forests, mountains, and near villages in Madagascar. Lastly, the lemur only weighs a surprising amount of 2 pounds.
The population decline of the Northern sportive Lemur has put them on the top 10 list of endangered animals. There are only about 18 of these lemurs left in the world; all of which live in Madagascar. These lemurs habitat has been lost due to deforestation. Also people have been illegally hunting these lemurs. Local bushmeat hunters have been hunting the lemurs for their meat and fur. During the day the hunters go and take the lemurs while they are sleeping.
Many things are being done in help of saving the lemur. Many lemur species, including the Northern sportive Lemur, are listed on the endangered/critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to stop the illegal hunters. Some zoos are holding organizations that are helping the lemur. Another thing that could possibly help the lemur is protesting wooden products emerged from Madagascar. Changes in Madagascar's policies and enforcements need to be done to increase the lemurs chance of living.
